In addition to the reports we had earlier, about plans to create cycling lanes along major roads in Chennai, the Chennai corporation budget has proposed more facilities that will make some parts of the city more pedestrian friendly. One of these includes restricting motor vehicle movement in certain parts of the city where the pedestrian population is dense. T.Nagar and Mylapore might be the first areas where the corporation plans to allow only cycles and pedestrians.

It gets better. To make the roads safer for cyclists, there is also a proposed cycling track for a 7 Km stretch along the Marina Beach. Like the bicycle-sharing system that was started in Bangalore earlier, the corporation plans to install a similar bicycle-sharing programme along the stretch as well. These cycle sharing stations will be at bus stops, railway stations and corporation offices. Although the number of cycles for the system isn't finalised yet, experts say around 1500 will be sufficient. To use these cycles, people can pay a nominal user fee which will be used for maintenance and security to prevent loss.

The concept of cycle sharing for the public is seen doing very well in many countries around the world. Cities like Paris and London have over 5000 cycles available to the public to use within the city.
