Cannondale is an International Bicycle brand considered to be one of the best in the industry. This American manufacturer of bicycles are known for revolutionary design, technology and engineering in all their bicycles with a varied range of models for all kinds of riders and surfaces. We got the opportunity to test ride the CAAD Optimo (Sora) (2018) and here is what we thought.
Weight: 10.5 kgs
Usage: Racing/Fitness
The Optimo (Sora) comes with Cannondale’s CAAD frame. CAAD standing for Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design. The frame has a strong and rounded down tube and smoothly welded edges which brings the strength to places where it is most needed. The top tube starts out as a big, stiff and almost square, but flattens right down on its way to the seat tube for vertical compliance. The stays are similarly elaborate, with cross-sections that vary continuously along their length. Like most Cannondale’s, the FSA bottom bracket uses bearings that press directly into the frame. The ride geometry is a bit aggressive and perfect for racing and long distance rides. The carbon fork was bladed and definitely helped shave off weight of the whole bicycle.
The Cannondale CAAD Optimo Sora 2018 which I test rode came in a Jet Black primary colour with White as the secondary colour for graphics, logo and text. The gloss paint job was shining and enhanced the colours immensely. The colours blended well and the graphics were minimal which gave an elegant outlook to the overall design.
The 2018 Optimo comes with a full Sora drivetrain. This means that the front derailleur is a Shimano Sora 2-Speed, and the rear derailleur is a Shimano Sora 9-Speed. These are controlled by Shimano Sora 2x9-Speed paddle shifters. The combination of the Sora drivetrain translates to smooth shifting with quick acceleration capabilities.
The stopping power on this Cannondale Road bicycle is controlled by Promax Dual Pivot Caliper brakes. These brakes did perform well on fast rides on flat tarmacs, proving safe and balanced stoppages.
The Cannondale C4 drop handlebar was ideal in width, giving the rider a comfortable riding posture at the top bar, hoods and drops.
The CAAD Optimo (Sora) 2018 comes with Double walled Alloy wheels mounted with fast rolling 700x25C Schwalbe Lugano tires. The 25mm tire width is a bit wider than the commonly used 23mm tires on most road bicycles at this price. This extra width helped during fast turns and the occasional rough patches on tarmacs.
The Cannondale Stage Ergo Saddle was ergonomically designed with the perfect width and length to give the rider comfort during fast and long rides.
This road bicycle’s Alloy frame is engineered to perfection with smoothly welded edges and is paired with a Carbon fork which keep the bicycle’s weight at just 10 kgs. The Shimano Sora 2x9-Speed gears were fast and seamless in shifting. Priced at Rs.76,600 (as on 9th January 2019) the Cannondale CAAD Optimo (Sora) (2018) is ideal for anyone looking to buy a road bicycle to foray into road racing and also fitness rides.
