Format is a Russian brand that is gaining popularity in the Indian market for well performing bicycles at a great price point, which is well suited to cyclists across all age groups. We got to review the Format Hurricane, read on for our thoughts.
The Format Hurricane has been made using an Aluminum Alloy frame which is lightweight and durable. The welding on the frame is smooth at the edges denoting good quality work. The geometry of the frame enables a comfortable upright riding position. The frame houses a mounting option for a single bottle holder. Additionally, it has mounting options for mudguards in the front and rear. The bicycle comes with a side stand. This bicycle comes in two sizing options – 17.5” and 20”.
This bicycle comes equipped with an entry-level Hi-Ten front suspension fork. The suspension fork worked well enough to absorb vibrations felt from rugged, bumpy terrains. A steel fork means added weight in the front, but that will make sure the bicycle is stable and that additional vibrations from rugged roads do not damage the frame. This bicycle will be ideal for usage on rough urban roads, flat mud trails or mud roads, and basic flat trails.
The Format Hurricane is a neatly designed bicycle. The paint finish appeared to be of top quality; additionally minimal branding and decals enhanced the aesthetic appeal and making this bicycle look sleek and eye-catchy. The bicycle we test rode came in a primary Red with Black and White decals. This bicycle is available in three colour options - Red/Black/White, Matt Black/Blue/Green and Dark Blue/Yellow/White.
The Format Hurricane is a 21-Speed bicycle that is equipped with Shimano Tourney front and rear derailleurs and Shimano ST-EF51 Shifters. This componentry is expected when it comes to entry-level bicycles at this price point. The derailleurs worked smooth, enabling efficient shifting. The shifters are well placed and functioned crisply, enabling quick and responsive transmission.
The Format Hurricane comes equipped with Disc Brakes at the front and rear. The brakes worked efficiently, ensuring powerful braking while staying stable. Both interval braking and abrupt braking felt stable and safe. The Brake Levers were placed well within reach, requiring only two or three fingers to operate. The brake levers required only a light pull to ensure effective braking. These brakes work effectively on both wet and dry surfaces.
The Format Steel flat handlebar on the Format Hurricane ensures a comfortable ‘open-chested’ riding position. The width of the handlebar enables enhanced stability on rugged flat trails and rough surfaces. However, I feel that the handlebar grips could do with a bit more cushioning to provide that extra comfort while handling the bicycle on rugged surfaces.
The Format Hurricane comes equipped with 27.5” x 1.95” tires that are attached to Format AL6061 rims. The tires are well treaded, providing additional stability and grip when on uneven surfaces. An advantage of 27.5” wheels is the ease of handling the bicycle on both on-road and off-road riding conditions. When tested on a smooth surface, the tires were fast rolling with enough traction to provide stability in wet riding conditions and on turns. The wheels do not have a Quick Release option, which could be slightly time consuming when tackling a puncture while on a ride. Though, I would not view this as a significant hindrance given the specs and price point of this bicycle.
The Format SQL saddle on this bicycle was well-cushioned and wide enough to comfortably accommodate one’s sit bones. Additionally, the seat post has a quick release option, making adjusting the height of the saddle easier on the go. The overall ride quality was smooth and satisfactory for an urban-focused leisure MTB.
