Giant ATX 1 (2017): ChooseMyBicycle.com Expert Review

The Giant ATX 1 2017 is an MTB designed to be used on city roads and off roads, on-trails and paths as well. Made using ALUXX- grade butted aluminium, the frame is durable and lightweight. Aluminium as a material provides sturdiness to the bicycle frame. The geometry of the frame ensures for a relatively upright, comfortable riding position, with supreme control of the bicycle.

The frame has two provisions for bottle holders to be mounted. However, on extreme trail rides, they could be prone to dirt and dust due to the positioning.

The Giant ATX 1 27.5,2017 comes with SR Suntour XCT suspension fork, with 100mm travel. During the test ride on bumpy roads, the 100mm travel proved effective in absorbing the shock felt from bumps, semi-paved roads and potholes.

Giant is known for their impeccable designs, and eye-catching bicycles. The Giant ATX 1 27.5 keeps in line with that. The glossy paint job on the frame is of premium quality. Available in one color, a vibrant blue with white accents, this bicycle is sure to make you stand out in a group ride.

The Giant ATX 1 2017 is equipped with a Shimano tourney front derailleur and a Shimano Acera rear derailleur. The 24 speed shifting is controlled by Shimano EF-51 shifters, which have been upgraded from the previous year’s counterparts.

A noteworthy point in this aspect is that there has been a downgrade in the front derailleur used on this year’s model from the previous year’s, from the Shimano Altus to Tourney. This is not much of a surprise from the pricing point of view.

In terms of the gearing, we felt that the shifting was rather smooth except for a persistent noise from the front gearing system when on the lowest gear. There was no evident lag in shifting and the transition was smooth. The Shimano EF-51 shifters worked flawlessly with no pronounced discomfort, other than the slight extra effort on the thumbs.

The Giant ATX 1 27.5 2017 comes assembled with Tektro 172 mechanical disc brakes, with a 160mm rotor, in the front and rear. The braking mechanism proved to be powerful, and extremely efficient. The brakes are sure to perform well in wet conditions and dry conditions alike. The brake levers are positioned comfortably and it doesn’t require much force to bring the bicycle to a complete stop.

This bicycle is equipped with a high-tensile steel, 25.4mm low rise, flat handlebar. The flat handlebar provides for better control and handling of the bicycle when on the saddle. The handlebar grips used on the bicycle are commendable for the comfort owing to the cushioned grips.

The Giant ATX 1 27.5, 2017 comes fitted with Giant Sport 27.5x2.1” tires, that are mounted on Giant double-walled alloy rims. The tires are fast-rolling on paved roads and have great grip on bumpy roads and trails. 27.5” tires are known for their agility due to lower wheel weight and superior control while on challenging terrains and trails.

The Giant Connect Upright Saddle that comes on this bicycle has been ergonomically designed to ensure comfort while riding. The design ensures an upright riding position, which is beneficial for better control and handling of the bicycle while riding challenging trails.
