Giant is one of the worldÍs most complete bicycle brand. Their range of bicycles are from kids, teenagers and also adults. The cycles are available for both recreational and professional use. Giant was one of the earliest brands to launch their 2017 range of bicycles in India. I got the opportunity to test ride the Giant Escape 1 2017 and here is what we thought.
The Giant Escape 1 2017 is built on an premium ALUXX alloy frame which is made by fluid forming technology by injecting high pressure liquid to bring out the sleek geometrical shape. Bring an urban bicycle the Escape series highly depends on keeping the frame weight minimal so as to make sure the rider is zipping past traffic and no extra effort is put in to pedal any extra weight. Both the top tube and the fork is shaped in a flat aero manner. During my 30km test ride on thing was very evident which was how effortless it was to pedal. The geometry is a perfect blend of comfort and performance.
The Escape series from Giant is one of their most successful urban on road models. Their design concept by itself speaks about speed and comfort. The flat shaped top tubes and fork makes the bicycle look aerodynamically enhanced. Escape series isnÍt all funky with colours and thatÍs the same case with the 2017 Escape 1 from Giant. The bicycle I test ride come in a black matte finish with patch of yellow in a few places. The brand and models names are shown subtly. This bicycle is sure to make heads turn on the road.
The Escape 1 is the highest of the models in Escape series in terms of the drivetrain. The gearing is equipped with Shimano Altus at the front and Shimano Alivio at the rear. These are a high performance combination of gearing for an urban bicycle mean to be ridden on city rides. The new model 27 speed Shimano Altus shifters were sleeker and smaller than the previous models and both the trigger and thumb shifters were flat, which was easy to place your finger on and engage. The gear changes were smooth and fast with not more than 2-3 pedals needed for the gear change to take place. Getting up to speed by rapidly shifting was easy to do during the test ride.
The Tektro linear pull brakes takes care of the stopping power on the Giant Escape 1 2017. During the test ride the brakes worked fine in city traffic and was easy to engage using the Tektro levers. The brake levers had cushioned padding which were easy on the fingers. The brakes werenÍt the best for rapid interval braking while going on higher speeds.
The Giant Connect low-raise handlebar is long and comfortable to hold on to thanks to the comfort palm padding on the handlebar grips. The length of the handlebar makes the rider ride open chested and also maneuver easily in traffic.
The all new Giant SX-2 700C x 32C tires are built on a lightweight ALUXX alloy rims which reduces the weight considerably. These tires are fast rolling and are wide enough to tackle those fast corners and even braking to skidding transitions. The puncture protection layer on the tires provide extra protection from smaller punctures on the road.
The Giant connect upright saddle on the Escape 1 2017 is perfect for an urban bicycle and a rider can last easily for 3-4 hours on the saddle without a break and not feel any soreness. The widest part of the saddle has a lot of cushioning which will make the ride on this bicycle even more comfortable.

There is no doubt that the Escape series of bicycles from Giant is one of worldÍs most successful hybrid bicycles. The Escape 1 2017 which is the higher end model in this series with high performance derailleurs. There are a few glitches but just the riding experience in traffic on flat roads at higher speeds is something not many hybrid bicycles can match. But there is one negative which must be highlighted, which is the price. At Rs.52,400 the least I expected was a carbon fork and/or mechanical disc brakes. Leaving the price tag out this is an amazing bicycle but unfortunately it is not where close to being value for money.
