The Escape series, by Taiwanese manufacturer Giant, is aimed at making city riding more efficient and fun. The Escape 2 (2017) is out, bolder and brighter. We got to review the Escape 2 from their 2017 range of bicycles. Here is what we thought.
Brand:ξGiant
Model:ξEscape 2
Category:ξHybrid
Year: 2016
Price: INR 37,700
Made using GiantÈs in-house ALUXX-grade butted aluminium alloy frame, the Giant Escape 2 (2017) weighs little and is strong. The frame is ergonomically designed and the geometry ensures an upright riding position. The frame has been modified in the chainstay area, and is flatter compared to itsÈ last year counterpart. This is sure to reduce drag. The frame has the provision for two water bottle holders to be mounted.
This hybrid bicycle has a high-tensile steel fork which reduces the impact felt from rough roads thereby ensuring better control. The provision of low-rider rack mounts on the fork, makes this bicycle a good option for touring.
Giant is known for their impeccable sense of design, without altering or affecting performance. This is evident in the design of the Escape 2 (2017), which has been manufactured with internal cabling. Not only does this add to the visual aesthetics of the bicycle but it also reduces considerable amount of drag felt with external cabling.
Another major change that Giant has made to the Escape 2 in the 2017 range is the bold colored frame of the bicycle Available in Indian markets right now is a bright Lime green frame with a matt finish that is sure to make you stand out wherever you ride.
The Giant Escape 2 (2017) comes equipped with a Shimano Altus groupset. The 24 speed (3x8) gearing is commendable, offering a number of possible gearing combinations which is sure to make climbing easier. The shifting is controlled by Shimano M310 shifters. The positioning of the shifters on the Escape 2 (2017) is different from its 2016 counterpart. The shifters are positioned with better reach while gripping the handlebar. Though, this may take some getting used to, it sure makes a difference.
The shifting was found to be smooth with no lag in gear shifts. The thumb shifters/ triggers are very responsive and require minimal effort to change gears.
The Giant Escape 3 (2017) comes equipped with Tetkro V-brakes. The braking was found to be powerful and effective on wet and dry surfaces alike. The brake levers have been positioned well and do not require any extra reach or efforts to access them.
The Giant Connect handlebar on this bicycle is a flat handlebar. Thereby enabling supreme handling and control. However, I felt that the handlebar is on the lengthier side and could leave you feeling uncomfortable while gripping the ends on a long ride. The handlebar grips on the cycle are supremely comfortable and are commendable.
The Giant Escape 2 (2017) is equipped with Giant S-X3 puncture protect 700x32c tires. They are fast rolling and incredible smooth on city roads.ξ In addition, the threading on the tires is sure to withstand mild trails, bumpy roads and muddy surfaces with ease.
The Giant Connect Saddle has been ergonomically redesigned, making long rides on this bicycle extremely comfortable. A major brownie point for Giant here!
The saddle post does not come with a quick release. Though this does not affect performance in any way and shouldnÈt be a hassle. For people using their bicycles in the city regularly, this can be a bonus as chances of the saddle being stolen are considerably reduced.
An eye-catching hybrid designed to perform outstandingly well on city roads, the Escape 2 (2017) by Giant is a definite must buy for regular city riders with the spirit for adventure. This versatile city bicycle is sure to be the perfect companion on long tours too.
Prices are subject to change by the brand, without due notice.
