GoZero Skellig Pro: ChooseMyBicycle.com Expert Review

The GoZero Skellig Pro has been built using a full Steel frame. This hardtail MTB frame has a slanting top tube which ensures increased stand over clearance for the rider and also a comfortable riding posture. Being a Steel frame, this E-bicycle is strong and does feel a little on the heavier side, but being an electric bicycle this is not a hindrance when riding. The front suspension fork comes with just enough travel to handle potholes and speed breakers on the roads.

The GoZero Skellig Pro comes with a Matte Dark Grey frame with Black graphics. The rims and the suspension fork on the bicycle were Black in colour, making it a good contrast to the Dark Grey frame. In addition to its simple design and paint job, the battery was shaped well and in a full black casing to blend with the frame’s triangle. The large LCD display definitely enhanced the overall aesthetics of this Electric Bicycle.

The GoZero Skellig Pro comes with a 250W brushless DC motor located at the hub of the rear wheel which is powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery, with a capacity of 400Wh(11.6Ah). This extended battery capacity compared to the GoZero Mile and One ensures a mileage range of between 50-70kms. The mileage can fluctuate according to the terrain, riding mode and weigh of the rider and on the bicycle. The battery takes about 4 hours to charge.

The Bicycle functions on two operating modes, one being Pedal-Assist and the second being Hub and Throttle driven. In the Pedal-Assist mode, there are 6 levels – from 1 to 6, each determining the amount of momentum provided by the Pedal-Assist system. 1 being the least, and 6 being the most assist. In the throttle mode, one achieves additional momentum by simply moving the throttle on the right grip of the handlebar, similar to the accelerator on scooters and motorbikes. The pick-up was excellent while using both modes, and the power sufficient to effortlessly conquer climbs and head winds. The LCD controller display on the middle of the handlebar is backlit and displays the speed, distance travelled, motor temperature and the amount of battery charge left.

Unlike the GoZero Mile and One models, the Skellig Pro model from GoZero comes with a 7-Speed Microshift drivetrain, this 7-Speed gear system has some benefits to the rider when riding an Electric Bicycle. When using the Pedal-Assist modes at high speeds, the E-bicycle will be travelling faster than you can pedal. Hence to match the cadence level these gears will come in handy. Additionally if in case the rider runs out of battery charge during a ride, the 7-Speed gears help in reducing the effort to be put into pedalling. The 7-speed Microshift rear derailleur comes with a sleek and easy to use Microshift shifters.

The GoZero Skellig Pro comes with Mechanical Disc brakes at the front and back. Since Electric Bicycles deliver speeds that require no effort, braking is an important component, in case one needs to get the E-Bicycle to a full stop within few metres. The Mechanical Disc brakes on this E-Bike worked efficiently, giving me confidence to ride without inhibitions in heavy city traffic. The handlebar on this bicycle is wide with a slight raise from the middle which made the riding posture open-chested and comfortable.

The GoZero Skellig Pro comes with a pair of Wanda King 26” x 2.35” MTB tires. The 2.35” width made it easy to roll over any rough surfaces on urban roads with ease. 26” tires are great in terms of on road performance with a faster rolling resistance. The tires are sure to work well providing adequate traction on both wet and dry surfaces.

The saddle on this E-Bicycle was well cushioned throughout, leaving no room for saddle sores or general discomfort when used on longer rides.
