Hero Cycles are one of the biggest and most successful bicycle brands in India. Hero has been around for more than 60 years now and has various categories of bicycles with a few sub-brands under them. The sub-brands being Hero Sprint, Hero Sprint Pro and Hero Octane. We got the opportunity to test ride the Hero Octane Salamander 29 and here is what we thought.
Weight: 15.8 kgs
Category: Trail/Leisure
The Hero Octane Salamander 29 is built on a strong and lightweight hardtail Alloy frame. MTB’s are supposed to be strong and often presumed to be heavy but this Alloy frame keeps the weight in check. The frame geometry with its slanting top tube is the ideal combination of comfort and aggressiveness which is suitable for trails and rough city roads.
The Spur suspension fork on the Salamander 29 came with a massive 100mm travel and also had a useful and smoothly working hydraulic suspension lockout.
The Hero Octane Salamander 29 which I test rode came in a full Black primary colour with White and Red as the secondary colours for text and graphics. The Red streaks and the Red colour suspension lockout lever were stylish and bright. The internal cable routing was not only aesthetic but also saved the gear cables from dust and major wear and tear.
The Salamander 29 comes equipped with Shimano Tourney TY500 3-Speed at the front and Shimano Altus M310 7-Speed at the rear as derailleurs. This Tourney/Altus combination shifted smoothly during the test ride. The Shimano Altus RapidFire Plus shifters were the latest editions with a sleek design and a gear indicator display.
The Logan branded Mechanical Disc brakes at the front and rear were powerful and perfect for precise and safe braking performance on trails. During the test ride, when braking on fast turns and in traffic, it felt balanced and had a quick response time. The Logan brake levers were easy to operate.
The 680mm Alloy handlebar was wide and gave an open chested riding posture while still being comfortable. The only downside was that the grips felt a bit hard.
The Hero Octane Salamander 29 rolls on a pair of Chaoyang branded 29" x 2.20" MTB tires along with double walled Alloy rims. The treading was bulky and evenly spaced out, giving superior traction on smooth and rough urban roads. The 29” wheel size ensured easy rolling over rough patches.
The stock Hyper-Aero Saddle was sporty in design with the perfect length and width to keep the rider comfortable and stable.
This MTB is built on a strong yet lightweight Alloy frame which is comfortable to ride. The 100mm front suspension fork comes with the best in class hydraulic suspension lockout feature. The 29” x 2.20” tire size ensured easy rolling over on trails and rough urban roads. Priced at Rs.21,700 (as on 12th August 2019) the Hero Octane Salamander 29 is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a performance focused MTB for venturing into trail rides without burning a hole in their pocket.

just awsmmmmm i love it .....
The cycle could have been made in a bit more bigger frame size variant also for tall people. The brakes starts making noise even before 1 month.. Otherwise in total the cycle is simply awesome.
