Merida is a Taiwanese Bicycle manufacturer who has been around since 1972. Merida is known for the performance packed, value for money bicycles with cutting edge design. The full 2020 range of Merida was launched in India recently. We got the opportunity to test ride the Merida Scultura 5000 (2020) and here is what we thought.

The Merida Scultura 5000 (2020) is a fast and feather light all-rounder road bicycle weighing just 8.4 Kgs.
The Scultura 5000 is built on a full Carbon frame. This CF2 full Carbon frame is super light and durable thanks to its NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautic) fastback profiled down tube and seat tube for improved aerodynamics. Wind tunnel testing from Merida has ensured the teardrop shaped tubes enable perfect airflow at the lowest weight. The rigid fork on this bicycle is made of Merida’s Scultura CF Carbon. The bladed fork contributes to smooth steering and keeping the front half of the bicycle light.

Merida’s design, especially on Road Bikes are top notch and the same was reflected on the 2020 Scultura 5000. This frame comes in a Matte Red primary colour with Black graphics. The improved tube profiling definitely has made the finishing look aerodynamic and aesthetic.

The Scultura 5000 is equipped with a full Shimano Ultegra Road drivetrain. Ultegra is Shimano’s top end performance drivetrain. It sits only beneath Dura-Ace in the road component line-up. During the test ride both at the front and rear, the gears shift cleanly, smoothly and quietly. I never missed a gear or felt the shifter being unresponsive when I needed to change gears quickly. It shifts well under load and on inclines as well. The 2x11-Speed integrated Shimano Ultegra shifters were easy to use with feather light pushes to change the gears.

The Scultura 5000 (2020) comes with Shimano 105 Caliper brakes at the front and rear. These lightweight braking components made sure the braking was precise and balanced on both dry and wet tarmacs.
The Merida Expert SL drop handlebar was perfect in width making them not too wide nor too cramped. Getting off the saddle and accelerating was easier thanks to the great steering response which this handlebar provided.

The Continental Grand Sport Race 700x25C folding tires on the Scultura 5000 are race specific tires which are built to be lightweight but reliable. The puncture protect tech ensures the tires and tubes are saved from smaller punctures on the road.
The Merida Comp SL Saddle was not only colour coded, but has a level of support and cushioning that suits the rider on faster rides just as much as those riding a century ride.

This Road Bicycle comes with a full Shimano Ultegra drivetrain and Shimano 105 Caliper brakes. The lightweight carbon frame with carbon fork kept the overall weight very low at just 8.4 kgs. The design and graphics were aesthetic and the matte finish was smooth and of top notch quality. Priced at Rs.1,68,490 (as on 6th February 2020) the Merida Scultura 5000 (2020) is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a Bicycle for Road Racing, Touring and Fitness Rides.
