Merida is a Taiwanese Bicycle manufacturer who have been around since 1972. Merida are known for their performance packed, value for money Bicycles with cutting edge design. We got the opportunity to test ride the Merida Silex 200 (2022) and here is what we thought.
Weight: 10.4kgs
Usage: Gravel/Flat Track
The Merida Silex 200 is built on a Silex Lite Aluminium frame. Whilst there is a notion that Gravel Bicycles, which are also meant to be ridden on rough surfaces have heavier frames, this is not the case with this frame as the hydro forming triple butted tubing system, which has helped shape the tubes in a way to use material only where it is needed the most. Acceleration was top notch and the riding position was comfortable. The frame was well supported by lightweight rigid CF2 full carbon fork.
This Gravel Bike from Merida which we test rode came in an Orange coloured frame with Black as the secondary colour for graphics and text. The gloss finish paint job quality was smooth with aesthetic graphics. Internal cable routing for the gear cables made sure the Bicycle looked neat and also increases the life of the cables.
The Silex 200 is equipped with Shimano’s Sora groupset at the front and rear as derailleurs. This Sora 2x9-Speed drivetrain is the 2nd from the bottom in Shimano’s road component stable. The shifting was quick and responsive during the test ride. The Sora shifters have no gear indicators and have gone for a sleek look which is similar to 105 and Ultegra shifters.
To make it a full performance focused groupset, the Merida Silex 200’s stopping power is handled by Promax Mechanical Disc brakes. These Mechanical Disc brakes provide powerful and comfortable performance thanks to Promax’s significant increase in rotor and brake pad quality.
The drop handlebar on this Bicycle was comfortable on the hoods and drops. The bar tape was grippy even with wet hands and gloves.
The Maxxis Rambler 700x38C Gravel tires were perfect for racing and climbing on uneven surfaces. The rubber compounds were strong and does give a long life, thus making it value for money.
The Entity stock Saddle was designed ergonomically for an endurance rides to make sure the rider can be seated for long hours on rough surfaces without experiencing any soreness.
With an Alloy frame and a Carbon fork combination that shines when conditions get rough, this Bicycle is a fine entry into the world of Gravel cycling. The balanced Promax Mechanical Disc brakes and a comfortable riding posture provide full control of the Bicycle on rough and wet surfaces. If you are someone looking to get into gravel/single track riding then the Silex 200 (2022) from Merida is definitely a great choice to consider.
