Montra is an Indian Bicycle manufacturer under the T.I Cycles group. This Performance Bicycle brand has Hybrids, MTBs and Electric Bicycles in various designs and models. The 2022 range has various MTB models and we got the opportunity to test ride the Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) and here is what we thought.
Weight: 15.8kgs
Usage: Fitness/Trails/Leisure
The Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) has a 6061 Hardtail Alloy frame. The frame has a conventional geometry with a downward sloping top tube. The top and bottom tubes are fused at the front, making a solid front area of the frame that can easily handle a lot of hard hitting and vibrations on trails and other rough/rugged surfaces. The riding geometry was comfortable and ideal for flat trail rides as well as rides on urban roads that are rugged and smooth.
This Hardtail MTB comes with a Zoom branded Suspension Fork with an 80mm travel. Additionally, the fork has a mechanical lockout, which is quite handy. Activating the lockout makes the suspension rigid, thereby making the ride smoother and easier especially when the need to accelerate on flatter roads arises.
The Bicycle that was test ridden came in a primary colour of Nickel Blue with Black on the frame, with decals and graphics in a secondary colour of Neon Orange and Grey. The colours used are contrasting and flashy with multiple colours in one frame. This colour combination comes down to a matter of personal choice for the rider. The gloss finish paint job was smooth and premium in quality.
The Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) comes equipped with a Shimano Tourney TZ500 front derailleur and a Shimano Tourney rear derailleur. While the drivetrain componentry is entry-level, the shifting was smooth and is ideal for quick shifts on flat trails and urban roads. There was no evident lag in the gear transmission when on the test ride. The Shimano Tourney 21-Speed trigger shifters were easy to shift with clear numbered gear indicators.
The Backbeat 27.5 (2022) comes equipped with Logan Mechanical Disc brakes. The braking power offered was sufficient to bring the Bicycle to a stable halt on both flat trails and urban roads. The standard brake levers are well placed, and are easy to operate requiring only 2-3 fingers to access.
The Alloy handlebar was wide enough to ensure optimum control on fast turns while being stable. Additionally, the width of the handlebar ensures an ‘open-chested’ comfortable riding posture.
This Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) rolls on a pair of Maxxis Ardent 27.5” x 2.4” MTB tires. The tires were heavily treaded with a uniform tread pattern, ensuring stability and safety while on uneven rugged surfaces. The massive 2.4” width is the highest there has been on Montra MTB’s and this upgrade made this Bicycle roll over rocky surfaces with ease. The Double Walled Alloy rims were strong enough to handle a fair bit of hard hitting from the surface.
The XMR Saddle has been ergonomically designed to ensure that the rider is comfortable and sore free on bumpy rides.
The Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) is a Hardtail MTB that comes equipped with an Alloy frame and a Zoom front suspension fork with a lockout option for smoother riding on flat and even surfaces. The Logan Mechanical Disc brakes were powerful and the 27.5" x 2.4” Maxxis tires are heavily treaded and offer great grip. Priced at Rs.26,480(as on 20th August 2022) the Montra Backbeat 27.5 (2022) is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy an affordable and capable MTB for regular usage on rough city roads, as well as for the occasional off-roading on rugged paths and mild trails.
