Montra is an Indian Performance Bicycle brand with a wide range of Bicycles for all kinds of riders. The 2022 range of Bicycles from Montra has seen the Rock MTB range get new designs. We got the opportunity to test ride the Montra Rock 29 (2022) and here is what we thought.
Weight: 15.1kgs
Usage: Trail/Leisure
The Montra Rock 29 (2022) is built around a Hardtail 6061 Alloy frame. This top tube is slanting from the front to the seat tube. This gives extra standover clearance for the rider, which is helpful when riding over bumpy trails. The seat stays are shaped in a way which helps absorb vibration off the surface and thus making it comfortable for the rider. The heaviness of this Bicycle is its strength as it can take the hard hitting of the surface.
The Zoom 565-D front suspension fork has a 100mm travel which works well on flat trails with occasional bumps. The mechanical suspension lock-out was useful in making the fork rigid and thus go faster on flat roads.
This Hardtail MTB which we test rode came with a Dark Grey primary colour with Black and Neon Orange as the secondary colours. The matte finish paint job enhanced the colours. The gloss stickers on the matte frame were stylish and elegant. The slanting top tube, thin tubes and heavy treads all make this bicycle look like a rugged MTB. The bulky tires enhanced the rugged MTB look of this Cycle.
The Rock 29 (2022) comes equipped with Shimano Altus at the front and rear as derailleurs. These derailleurs worked well during the test ride with no lags experienced. The 27-Speed drivetrain had the range for steep climbs as we as to go all out on higher gears. The Shimano Altus M2000 trigger shifters were easy to use and is comfortable to reach from the handlebar grips.
The Logan Hydraulic Disc brakes handle the stopping power on the Rock 29 (2022). These are performance focussed Hydraulic Disc brakes which are powerful enough to keep the Bicycle in control on both flat and slippery rough trails. Both jamming of the brakes and interval braking felt safe even at high speeds.
The 700mm handlebar on this Hardtail MTB is impressive in length. This width enables superior control and manoeuvrability of the Bicycle when riding fast on flat trails. The handlebar grips were comfortable but it did lack some cushioning when riding over bumpy surfaces.
As in the name of this Bicycle, the Rock 29 (2022) rolls on a pair of 29” x 2.40” Kenda Kadre tires. These tires had bulky treads which were evenly spaced out including at the corners. These treads along with the massive 2.40”width helped the Cycle roll over bumpy trails with ease.
The XMR Trail Saddle has the perfect length, width and cushioning to keep the rider sore free on bumpy trails.
This Hardtail MTB is fitted with a 100mm Zoom front suspension fork and a useful front suspension lock-out. The 27-Speed Shimano Altus gears give a good range for climbing as well as for acceleration. The Kenda Kadre 29” x 2.40” heavily treaded tires help maintain good traction on rough surfaces and the Logan Hydraulic Disc brakes helped make the ride safer. Priced at Rs.56,050 (as on 11th May 2023) the Montra Rock 29 (2022) is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a MTB for riding on the roughest of trails.
