Folding bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in the country, especially with urban commuters looking for a compact and portable bicycle that is easy to use. One brand that has gained popularity for durable and strong bicycles is Tern. Established in 2011, this Taiwanese company is widely known for their folding bicycles and their philosophy is to build bicycles while trying to change the way people commute. We got the opportunity to check out the Tern Link B7. Read on to see what this bicycle is all about.
Weight: 12.1 kgs
Category: Commute/Leisure
The Tern Link B7 has been made using an Aluminium Alloy frame. The folding technology used on this bicycle is patented, and of top quality. The price point of the bicycle is justified by the usage of top-notch tech for the locking mechanisms. Given the intricate design of folding bicycles, the folding mechanism needs to be high quality to ensure safety of the rider while on the bicycle. We felt that the bicycle was stable and secure even when tested on uneven and rugged terrain. The geometry of this bicycle ensures a comfortable ride, and it feels like riding a regular sized bicycle. The design of the top tube allows for easy mounting and dismounting. This bicycle has a Hi-Tensile steel fork.
This bicycle weighs 12.1 kilograms, and the dimensions once folded are 39.5x80x73 cm. This bicycle is available in a single frame size. Additionally, this bicycle comes with an aluminium bell, a center-mounted side stand and has the option for mudguards to be attached at the front and the back.
Folding bicycles have an interesting look given the intricacy in terms of their design. This is owing to a delicate balance between looks, ability to be as compact as possible, and performance. The bicycle we test rode came in a primary colour of Dark Blue with Grey branding. The branding on the bicycle has been kept to a bare minimum, which enhances the aesthetics of it. The paint job on the bicycle appears to be of high quality and a good finish. This bicycle is available in 3 colour options – Blue, Orange and Red.
The Tern Link B7 comes equipped with a 7-Speed Shimano Tourney rear derailleur whose shifting is controlled by a Shimano Revo grip shifter. The shifting was quick, concise and responsive. The benefit of a grip shifter is that it is easy to understand and operate, even for a beginner. The range of speed options is well suited for a bicycle aimed at city commutes as well as for leisure distance riding. Additionally, the large crank enables a better distance covered per pedal stroke ratio. This bicycle is sure to perform well on flat roads, as well as on roads with mild elevation such as flyovers.
The Tern Link B7 comes equipped with alloy V-Brakes. The braking mechanism was efficient and worked well, however I feel that it could use a little more power for abrupt stopping. Interval and abrupt braking felt stable and controlled. The brakes levers are well placed and easy to operate.
This bicycle comes equipped with an Alloy flat handlebar whose height is adjustable. The handling and steering was precise and responsive. An adjustable handlebar height allows for the rider to adjust the handlebar to a position that they are comfortable with, this is a big plus point here. This feature makes it a great bicycle for people of various heights. When on the test ride, I found that the handlebar grips felt slightly hard and could do with a little extra cushioning.
The Tern Link B7 comes equipped with 20"" Kenda Impac StreetPac tires which are attached to Aluminium Rims. The 20” tires ensure easy usage and manoeuvring in urban settings. These tires are well treaded and ensure good grip while on the road. The tires are sure to handle dry and wet surfaces with ease.
The Tern Comfort saddle on this bicycle was wide enough to accommodate one’s sit bones while being comfortable and well-cushioned. The seat post comes with a Quick Release option, allowing for adjustment of the saddle height, which is convenient while on the move. Overall, the ride quality was quite commendable.
