Btwin Triban 100 Flatbar (2018) - Review

With a frame made using 661 Aluminium Alloy, the Btwin Triban 1 Flatbar is not only a good-looking bicycle, it is lightweight and sturdy too. The comfort-oriented geometry of the frame allows for a more upright and comfortable riding position. This is a big plus for beginners looking for a road bicycle for commutes and leisure long distance riding. This bicycle is available in three sizes – Extra Small, Small/Medium and Large/Extra Large. Additionally, the frame allows for the mounting of rear pannier racks and has inlets for rear mudguard mounts.The straight Hi-ten Steel fork provides additional comfort and precision, additionally the 1-1/8” headtube provides immense strength and rigidity to the steering set-up. The design of the fork is such that it absorbs most of the vibrations from bumpy roads efficiently, transferring minimal shake to the handlebars. This bicycle weighs a mere 11 kgs when weighed without the pedals.

The Btwin Triban 1 Flatbar is a 7-Speed road bike, with a single chainring designed for efficiency and comfort. The 14/34 cassette is inspired by mountain bikes and enables the rider to pace well. A commendable feature is the difference in the jump between the sixth and seventh gear – A larger jump which gives the rider a greater range of usage. For example, when riding on a flat road/a road with tailwind this larger jump enables for a faster ride with more power, requiring less effort or stress to pedal.The drivetrain on this bicycle comprises of a Shimano Tourney 7-Speed rear derailleur, and the shifting is controlled by a Shimano Altus 7-Speed trigger shifter, placed on the handlebar. The shifting was crisp and incredibly efficient.

‘Simplicity and aesthetically pleasing’ – this is what comes to mind when I think of the words to describe the design of the Btwin Triban 1 Flatbar. Available in a simple grey with black decals and minimal branding, this bicycle comes across as simple, yet sleek. The glossy paint job appears to be top quality.

The Btwin Triban 1 Flatbar comes equipped with Promax V RC 482 calliper brakes. The callipers have provisions that allow the rider to install mudguards, which is essential to keep in line with the bicycle's fame to be a versatile road tourer/commuter. The braking was efficient and reliable. Feathered braking was comfortable and felt stable, however abrupt braking felt quite strong. This bicycle comes equipped with a Flat Handlebar. The handlebar on the bicycle is slightly wide and allows for superior control and manoeuvrability. A flat handlebar ensures an ‘open-chested’ and comfortable upright riding position. The Btwin Comfort grips have just the right amount of cushioning, and were comfortable to use.

The Triban 1 Flatbar comes equipped with Btwin Sport 7x32C Hybrid tires, and double-walled rims. The treading has small studs for increased performance while the sides of the tires have larger studs to enhance the grip while on bends on loose grounds or gravel. The front wheel has a Quick Release Option, allowing for quicker removal of the front wheel. However, there is no QR option on the rear wheel. The stock saddle on the Triban 1 Flatbar is the Btwin Sport 1 saddle. The saddle was well cushioned, allowing for a hassle-free comfortable ride even when tested on slightly rugged roads. The seat post has a Quick Release which allows for easy and quick saddle height adjustments to be made while on the go.
