Merida Crossway 40D (2018) - Review

The Merida Crossway 4D (2018) comes with a lightweight Crossway speed alloy frame. This 661 aluminium frame is built using the Techno Forming System or TFS. This system helps maintain a low weight while still providing good strength. This system also allows for innovative shapes in the frame, which helps keep the geometry required in balance, thanks to the top notch moulding process. The adjustable quill system allows for a taller and straight back riding posture for the rider.The SR Suntour NEX HLO front suspension fork comes with a minimal 63mm travel which was just about enough for those bumps and speed breakers on city roads. The suspension lockout was useful and easy to use on flat roads.

Being a performance focused hybrid the gearing plays a big part in making or breaking the ride quality. The Crossway 4D comes equipped with Shimano Altus at both the front and rear as derailleurs. These derailleurs worked smoothly during the test ride. Both the front and rear derailleurs shifted quickly and without any lag. There was a challenging incline during the test ride and the time it took me to quickly shift down and pedal my way up was a testament to how seamless these derailleurs were. The shifters were standard Shimano Altus rapid fire which were easy to use.

The Crossway 4D which I test rode came in a full black frame with red and grey graphics. Merida's design has neither been simple nor flashy. The matte finish paint job is of the highest quality and makes the black colour look classy. The brand name and model name was mentioned in a uniform font in different sizes at multiple places.

The Tektro TA hydraulic disc brakes took good care of the stopping power during the test ride. For the price of this bicycle I did expect to see hydraulic disc brakes and that's exactly what was there. These 16mm hydraulic brakes were balanced and safe to use. These brakes come to a complete halt when jamming the brakes at good speeds in a very short time.The Merida Comp 66 R25 handlebar was wide with a slight raise from the middle. The already lengthy stem along with these wide handlebars made the riding posture comfortable for longer rides.

The Crossway 4D comes with Kenda 7c x 4c hybrid tires, which are well supported by Merida Alex rims. These tires have impressive tread patterns to give good traction on urban roads. The wheelset on the whole was lightweight and did contribute to keeping the weight of the bicycle in check. The Cross Sport saddle on this bicycle was ergonomically designed making the sit bones placed on the widest points of the saddle. The overall ride quality was comfortable and fast on urban roads.
