Tern Verge N8 - Review

The Tern Verge N8 has been made using a Hydroformed Aluminum Alloy. I feel that its price point is totally justified solely by the quality of the componentry used in this department. Given the intricate design of folding bicycles, the folding mechanism has to be top-notch to ensure optimum safety of the rider. We felt that the bicycle was stable and secure even when tested on uneven and rugged terrain. The geometry and design of this bicycle makes for a slightly aggressive riding position – for a foldie. The unique folding technology used by Tern ensures that the bicycle rides like a ‘normal’ bicycle. The design of the top tube allows for easy mounting and dismounting. The bicycle comes with provision for mudguards. This bicycle has a Hi-Tensile Steel fork. This bicycle weighs 11kgs, and the dimensions once folded are 38x79x72 cm. Additionally, this bicycle comes with an Aluminum bell and a center-mounted stand.

The Tern Verge N8 comes equipped with an 8-Speed Shimano Claris rear derailleur whose shifting is controlled by a Shimano trigger shifter. The shifting was quick and concise, while being responsive and easy to understand and operate. The range of speed options is well suited for a bicycle aimed at city commutes as well as leisure distance riding. Additionally, the large crank enables a better distance covered per pedal stroke ratio. The bicycle is surprisingly smooth and can be used for short city commutes and longer distance leisure rides.

Generally, folding bicycles tend to have an interesting look given the intricacy in terms of their design. This is largely attributed to a delicate balance between looks, ability to be as compact as possible, and performance. The bicycle we test rode had a black frame with grey and red decals and branding. The overall look of this bicycle is eye-catching while being interesting and aesthetically pleasing. The paint job on the bicycle appears to be of high quality and a good finish.

The Tern Verge N8 comes equipped with alloy V-brakes. The braking mechanism worked efficiently to bring the bicycle to a complete stop. The braking power offered is impressive. Interval and abrupt braking felt stable and controlled. The braking is ideal for city usage as well as longer distance leisure rides. The brakes levers are well placed and require two to three fingers to operate.This bicycle comes equipped with a handlebar whose height is adjustable. The narrower width of the handlebar makes for an aggressive and sporty feel. The handling and steering was precise and responsive. An adjustable handlebar height allows for the rider to adjust the handlebar to a position that they are comfortable with, this is a big plus point here. This feature makes it a great bicycle for people of various heights. When on the test ride, I found that the handlebar grips felt slightly hard and could do with a little extra cushioning.

The Tern Verge N8 comes equipped with 2” Schwalbe Kojak tires which are attached to Aluminium Rims. The 2” tires ensure easy usage and manoeuvring in urban settings. Furthermore, the tires come with puncture protection. These tires are slick tires and have no treading, which make the overall ride fast and zippy, however could be prone to some skid while riding in wet conditions. The stock saddle on this bicycle was comfortable enough to accommodate one's sit bones. However, I felt that the saddle was on the harder side and could use more cushioning. The seat post comes with a Quick Release option, allowing for adjustment of the saddle height, which is convenient while on the move. Overall, the ride quality was quite commendable.
