Established in 1971, Cannondale is an American bicycle manufacturer that has earned a strong reputation for innovation and quality. They manufacture high-end bicycles specializing in aluminium and carbon fibre frames. The ‘Synapse’ range from Cannondale are enduro-race bicycles that emphasize on performance and comfort. We got the opportunity to check out the Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105). Read on to know more about the bicycle.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) is made using an ultra-lightweight Synapse BallisTec Carbon frame. Carbon fiber composite is an increasingly popular non-metallic material used for high-end bicycle frames. Although expensive, it is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and durable, and can be formed into almost any shape desired. The result is a frame that can be fine-tuned for specific strength where it is needed, while allowing flexibility. This bicycle features an enduro-race geometry where the riding position has a perfect balance of aggressiveness and comfort allowing for optimum performance while being comfortable. The frame on this year’s bicycle has been designed such that it weighs in at a mere 950g, that is over 220 grams lighter than before.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) comes with a Synapse SAVE BallisTec Carbon fork. Cannondale’s S.A.V.E (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) is a Micro Suspension Technology that works to reduce vibrations felt from the road, transferring minimal shock to the rider’s arms.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) is a well-designed road bicycle that is available in a single colour option, a primary blue with fluorescent yellow-green decals and branding. The bicycle has internal cable routing which enhances the aerodynamics of the bicycle and also, adds to its neat aesthetics. The branding on the frame has been kept to a bare minimum, with just the brand name on the main frame and the model on the fork. Overall, a great looking bicycle that is sure to attract attention.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) comes with unarguably, one of the best componentry in this department, i.e. a complete Shimano 105 groupset. The front derailleur is a 2-Speed Shimano 105 FD-5800 and the rear derailleur is a 11-Speed Shimano 105 RD-5800 RD. The shifting is controlled by Shimano 105 ST-5800 shifters. Shimano 105 is synonymous with efficiency and precision. This 22-Speed bicycle provides a wide range of gearing options for a long distance endurance rider that can be used to conquer a multitude of riding scenarios, leaving no question of requiring an additional gear to power through a hard stretch. The shifting was seamless and the derailleurs worked effortlessly in making the ride quality superior, leaving absolutely no room for complaints. The placement of the shifters were easily accessible from the main frame handlebar.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) comes equipped with Shimano 105 V-Brakes. The brakes were responsive while on the test ride. Feathered braking performed impressively, with the right amount of stoppage while feeling safe and balanced. I feel, the only area in need of some getting used to would be the overall stoppage power with abrupt braking, which did not feel very balanced.
This bicycle comes equipped with a Cannondale C3 handlebar. The width of the handlebar was perfectly in line with my shoulders, allowing for a well-balanced riding position that enabled superior control of the steering. The steering was slightly over responsive with sudden manoeuvring. The handlebar drops were positioned remarkably well, to allow a comfortable yet aero riding position.
The Cannondale Synapse Carbon (105) comes equipped with a pair of Mavic Yksion WTS 700x25C, folding tires which are attached to Mavic Aksium WTS Rims. The dimensions of these tires are slightly wider than the 700x23C tires on many road bicycle. This slightly broader width works well on long distance rides, across varied terrains. Given that this is an enduro-road bicycle, the dimensions are perfect and do not affect the overall speed or performance capabilities of this bicycle.
Being an endurance road bicycle, comfort is a major factor that plays a role in the overall ride quality. The Selle Royale Seta S1 saddle that comes on this bicycle is perfectly in line with this requirement. The width of the saddle was perfect to comfortably accommodate one’s sit bones and the cushioning - just the right amount to call it perfect.
