Montra Backbeat 26" (2018)

Snapshot

The Montra Backbeat 26"" has been made using a hardtail 661 alloy frame which is not only lightweight but also durable and agile. The frame has been welded with precision, the top quality welding is evident in the smooth and neat appearance of the edges. The frame has an ergonomic geometry, allowing for a relatively upright riding position that ensures performance and comfort. The frame houses mounting options for two water bottle cages. Additionally, it has mounting options for mudguards, in the front and rear. Montra offers lifetime warranty on the bicycle frame. The bicycle is available in two sizing options - Small (16”) and Medium(17.5”).This bicycle comes equipped with a front suspension fork. The Zoom 389 suspension fork comes with a mechanical lock out. When on the test ride, the suspension worked well to absorb vibrations felt from rugged, bumpy terrains. This bicycle will work well on uneven city roads as well as on mild trails. The bicycle is not built for extensive trail riding though, given the design of it's headset and stem.

A well designed frame geometry, ideal for beginners

The Montra Backbeat 26" is a 21-Speed bicycle that is equipped with Shimano Tourney front and rear derailleurs. This componentry is expected, given the price point of the bicycle. The shifting is controlled by Shimano Altus shifters. The derailleurs worked smoothly, with no hints of delays or lags when on the test ride. The transmission between gears was seamless. The shifters are well placed and crisp to shift from one gear to another with no delay in transmission.

A 21-Speed MTB, with crisp shifting

When it comes to designing eye catchy bicycles, Montra has it all figured out. The backbeat 26” is an example of the same. The bicycle we test rode came in a primary Red colour with black and grey decals. The paint job on the bicycle has a high quality, glossy finish. The chainstay and seat stay on this bicycle has a new wave like design which looks to be tapering and reinforced. This has more of an effect on the overall aesthetics of the bicycle as opposed to its performance. This bicycle is sure to catch attention in stores and on the road.

A good looking leisure MTB

The Montra Backbeat 26"" comes equipped with Logan LG-3 Mechanical Disc brakes with 16mm rotors at the front and back. The brakes worked efficiently, ensuring powerful braking while staying stable. Both Interval braking and abrupt braking felt stable and safe. The Shimano EF-5 Alloy Brake Levers were placed well within reach, requiring only two or three fingers to operate. The brake levers required only a light pull to ensure effective braking. These brakes work effectively on both wet and dry surfaces. The XMR Alloy 68mm handlebar on the Montra Backbeat 26"", ensures a comfortable ‘open-chested’ riding position. Additionally, the width of the handlebar enables superior control and maneuverability of the bicycle, and enhanced stability on trails and rough surfaces. The handlebar grips were fairly cushioned and worked well to ensure minimal transfer of vibrations from the handlebar to the hand and arms while riding.

Effective braking with adequate stopping power

The Montra Backbeat 26"" comes equipped with Wanda P1197 26” x 1.95” tires. The dimensions of the tires are standard when it comes to 26” bicycles. The tires are well threaded, providing additional stability and grip when on uneven surfaces. When tested on a smooth surface, the tires were fast rolling with enough traction to provide stability in wet riding conditions and on turns. The wheels do not have a Quick Release option, which could be slightly time conusiming when tackling a puncture while on a ride. Though, I would not view this as a significant hindrance given the specs and price point of this bicycle. The Montra Trail saddle that comes on this bicycle is worth praise. When on the test ride, I found the saddle to be extremely comfortable, without any unnecessary bulk. The seatpost comes equipped with a Quick Release for the saddle, which is convenient when it comes to adjusting the saddle while on the move. The overall ride quality of this bicycle was very satisfactory.
