Winter means short dark days, wet windy evenings and even bleaker mornings, and with wet slippery roads filled with debris even the most experienced cyclist out there might consider skipping their daily commute or the leisure cycle ride.

However with the right gear, regular bicycle checks and a little info, you need not be afraid to step out with your bicycle in this winter weather. As a result of this weather many new and inexperienced cyclists face a raft of anxieties and challenges brought on by this change in season. We have come up with the best tips for all the cyclists and hope it will keep you in the saddle this winter.

1. Light Up!

It is extremely unsafe to ride a bicycle in the dark without lights and reflectors so make sure your bicycle has good lights, fitted where they can be seen. Advances in lighting technology means you do not have to rely on heavy but feeble lamps that need new batteries every few days. Instead, invest in powerful and lightweight LED lights that have beams to rival vehicle headlights, and are rechargeable via USB and last for hours between charges.

2. Mud Guards

A wet muddy back after a soaking morning ride is enough to make anyone lose interest. Mud guards, both on the front and back of your bicycle will save you from the muddy roads. Not to mention it also keeps fellow cyclists riding behind you happy as well.

3. Make Yourself Visible

Making sure you can be easily seen by other road users may save your life. Reflective clothing does not mean you have to dress up in a fluorescent tee. Research suggests a black jacket with reflective detailing is just as effective.

Reflective strips work by reflecting back any light that plays on them and has nothing to do with colour. Use knee and ankle strips too as the constant movement can alert drivers to your presence.

4. Bike Safety and Maintenance

Keep your bicycle in tip-top condition
